Congratulations and Happy 2016!


On behalf of the S'Agulla Team and myself, we would like to congratulate you for all the hard work. WELL DONE!!!

You have done lovely presentations to introduce yourselves and showed us a little about the bit of ocean that you enjoy!

Now we know that the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is not even, compared to last October average SST it is about 6ºC colder and that, depending on the area, the year with smallest SST oscillation was 2006 or 2014.

Taking the measure of the Secchi disk didn't go well, but it is an important measure to know indirectly how much plankton there is in the water. Remember that plankton is the base of the marine food chain!

The beaches you have been surveying have hardly no tides, but the Mediterranean Sea is not a lake, otherwise the SST would be the same all over!

You have similar kind of sand, with similar colour and grain size which make the profile of the beach also similar. Some of you have noticed with Google Earth's images that sand does accumulate at one side of the port. Have you guessed why?

And it has been fantastic to know your menu, so you love red shrimps but you really catch more anchovies!

Comments from Sharky! (Marine species)


Now I know what I will find on the menu when I swim over to your part of the ocean.
So I see you appreciate more the red shrimps although you fish more european anchovies. No problem, I'll have the shrimps as a started and the anchovies as the main course, yummy!!!

Looking forward to the rest of infographics, I like changes in my diet!

Audioguide (activity nº 5)


We are very pleased to see all the good work you are doing! While you are finishing off the infographic of the marine species we are moving on to the last activity of the Oceans project: the audioguide!

Activity nº 5: Audioguide
Objective: create an itinerary of the 'Fish Route', specifying the location of the fishing grounds, port, fish market and other information of your interest!

Comments from Sharky (The Sand)


So you have already gathered and analysed the data referring to the sand! 
Let's have a look....

Ins Puigcargol I just hope that all the sand is from the same beach. Remember that when doing research it is very important to know where the data comes from! Sorry to hear that you were not able to have a look at your coastal area with Google Earth's imagery, right now I do not know of any other source of aerial or satellite images.

Ok, now let's relate the granulometry with the height and diameter of your heap of sand. Does finer sand make taller or flatter heaps? Do you think that wind and waves will move the sand in different ways depending on the size of the grains?
You have not observed differences in the inclination of the slope of the beach face. But thinking on your results of the experiment, which beach do you think will have a steeper slope?

I see that the main factor that brings sand to the beach is rivers. But IES Tres Turons 1A says that the port prevents the arrival of sand from the Tordera River which is further north. What process brings the sand from the Tordera to Picòrdia beach of Arenys de Mar?

If you get the answer to the last question, you will also be answering the questions of the water!!!
Come on, think about it. All students from all the schools can suggest an answer!

Comments from Sharky (The Water)

I'm happy to see so much progress!
Thank you IES Puigcargol class A for introducing yourselves, it is a pleasure to meet you too!

So let's see what your sea looks like...

Ups! IES Tres Turons Class A, I'm afraid you will have to go over your GPS coordinates. You must say if the latitude is either north or south and your longitude east or west. By the way, are you sure your location is at longitude 42º?

And IES Tres Turons Class B, check-up the year with the largest and smallest SST oscillation it looks like you have got a little confused there.

Ok, so you all insist that you live around a sea that is like a lake because you have no tides!!! But is it really? Then how would you explain the differences between the monthly SST and your data, Puigcargol and Tres Turons don't have the same results! And you don't agree either with the year of smallest SST oscillation. How is it possible?

As I told you before, have a look at the shape of your beaches, it might give you an idea. Otherwise you can always ask the collaborators of the Oceans project. Your teacher has a detailed list!

Marine species (Activity 4)

Hello! While you are finishing off activity nº3 the Sand, we are moving on to the next activity.

Activity nº 4: Marine species
Objective: create an infographic of the 10 most important species caught by the fishermen of your closest port using the ICT Piktochart >>

Information included in the infographic per specie:
You will have to sign in, choose the option infographic, scroll down, choose the first template (Create your own infographic) and start editing.
An infographic is made by blocks, in each block you will describe one specie with the following information:
- Photo or some kind of illustration that allows its identification
-Common name in the local language
-Common name in English (only if local language is not English)
-Scientific name
-Percentage that represents the annual turn over
-Percentage of tonnes captured annually
-Any other information of YOUR INTEREST!

Once you have finished you can publish it and post the link provided by Piktochart on this blog to share it!

Comments from Sharky!!! (The Water)

Hello!!!! I'm Sharky and the S'Agulla Team have told me that you are studying my environment, the SEA!!!

So let's see what have you found out so far...

Ups! IES Tres Turons and IES Frederic Martí still have to put up their data. Come on, we are looking forward to know what the sea is like where you are!!!

Wow! Is the Mediterranean Sea like a lake???? You hardly have tides! But is it really???
As soon as we have the data from the other beaches we will see if it is all even as in a lake or different...

In any case I will give you a hint: now with the activity number 3 you are also going to look at your beach from above. What shape does it have? Is it a straight strip of sand as you find in lakes or is it rather triangular? 

If you still cannot understand what may be the cause of your results you can always ask the collaborators of the Oceans project. Your teacher has a detailed list!

Great to speak to you! And please post the photos of your beach, do not make me cross the whole Ocean to see it!!! THANK YOU!!!
